VELOCITY OF WATER

 

It is generally accepted practice to limit the velocity of water in commercial establishments,such as office buildings, to approximately 6 to 8 ft per second (fps) (1.8to 2.4 m/ s).

The primary reason is to reduce the noise produced by the water flowing in pipes.

 

For theaters and other quiet facilities, 2 to 4 fps (0.6 to 1.2 m/ s)

should be maintained.

 

Where quick closing valves are installed, a maximum velocity

of 4 fps (1.2 m/ s) is recommended to reduce water hammer.

 

Industrial facilities,where noise is not a factor, could have a velocity of up to 12 fps (4 m/ s),which is the highest generally thought not to produce erosion of the piping network.
